Reflex M Phono Stage Preamp

Reflex M Phono Stage

"Even fresh out of the box, I was struck by its extension, tonal accuracy, and realistic soundstage, especially when compared to CD copies and downloads of the same recordings... An additional week of break-in has opened up the sound even more." [HK, USA]

Breaking News: Reflex M At Bristol Sound & Vision 2014!

Q Acoustics are to use the Reflex M phono stage in their vinyl set-up at the Bristol show, 21-23 February.

The Reflex M phono stage is for Moving Magnet, Moving Iron and High-Output Moving Coil phono cartridges in the sensitivity range 1.5 to 10mV. Click here for our moving coil version.

This latest version introduced 2012 incorporates our ultra-linear innovations making for an even more natural and dynamic signature-free sound — the way music should be.

The Reflex M phono stage makes music like no other phono stage. It's sound stage is rock steady, having both width and depth, placing the music beyond the speakers. In a great sounding system its spatial capabilities are so lifelike it can often trick the ears into layering instruments vertically too!

It uses our ultra-linear fast active phono stage technology, combined with its true small and large signal symmetrical slew-rate, to pull more music from the groove and relegate vinyl nasties like clicks and pops further into the background.

In layman's language, our fast active phono stage technology means the circuit completely "forgets" the music it reproduced 0.06 micro-seconds before. That means there is no veil over the music, nor ever can be.

Ultra-linear - as close as you can get to valves (tubes) with the reliability and repeatability of solid state - never overloads like bi-polar transistors (BJTs). The cartridge is never called on to drive the voltage amplifier stage (VAS) integrator capacitor (like it is with integrated MM/MC phono stages), so it never destroys the music's integrity enabling you to relax deeper into the music.

The Reflex M is strong on tonal perfection and low on tonal distortion, rendering each instrument and voice in its exact register, underpinned with a detailed tuneful bass.

Although there is a dedicated moving coil Reflex – the Reflex C, the Reflex M phono stage can be coupled with the Elevator EXP electronic step-up "transformer" to provide the ultimate moving coil listening experience.

Excerpts taken from the Owners Club Forum:

"The Reflex M... is one of those products which causes audiophiles to remark, "Pardon me, while I pick my jaw up off the floor". A friend brought over his tube preamp made by a well-known USA Co, and costing several times the price of the Reflex M. No contest, really. The tube unit sounded fuzzy and lacking the dyamics of the Reflex. Also the Reflex M generally sounded more neutral.

"I received today the Reflex M and I have immediately removed the Amp2. What a difference! But what a huge difference. I read before in some reviews that you have to wait for 2 weeks to reach the perfection. I don't know how much it will get better in 2 weeks time, but I will let you know. The combination of Elevator and Reflex M "rocked my socks off". The music/vocals coming out of my Mordaunt Short Mezzo 6 are detailed, expressive and wide. The tempo is perfect and I can hear distinctly and clearly the beauty of every instrument. This is a quick reaction to the joy you brought to someone who likes the music and like the majority of the people can't afford equipments that cost thousands...

"A rich and detailed sound, very musical and involving and it is great on guitars of all kinds. This preamp made good acoustic guitars on vinyl sound more real and makes amplified electrics much better than before. In overall terms I was really impressed with how the different instruments and tracks can be heard but the whole song works together. That is a great achievement and gives me listening pleasure... In short: top end hi-fi at a reasonable price.

"I just got my Reflex M today. This thing is the best purchase I've made in vinyl playback gear so far... The Reflex M wrings out everything the Exact cartridge can give and delivers this rich, highly detailed sound I never thought was possible with vinyl... I'm falling in love all over again with albums I had become bored with after repeated listening sessions. I'm digging out stuff I wouldn't even consider listening to and enjoying the heck out of it. The Reflex M is everything you could ask for out of a top shelf phono preamp. If you love vinyl, you'll be extremely happy with the Reflex M. I dare say it's one of the best values in high-end audio.

"Even straight out of the box it was excellent but to me sounded, as expected, a bit bright and "thin". After the week it's become much better with a "fuller" sound. Yes, the detail it conveys is quite amazing. It's like listening to a new collection of vinyl all over again and very addictive!

Excerpt taken from StereoNet-Australia - sponsored forum:

"Sonically the new UL version shares the same sound signature as the older M, with the lovely, airy top end that I have come to expect. This has always been a joy for me with the Reflex and I was not disappointed with the UL. The midrange however, was a little different, but in a good way. In short it seemed to me that the new UL presented the complex combinations of instruments in a way that allowed of instruments there own space. Sure, with the old M I could still hear each instrument, but the UL seemed to delineate between them better, allowing one to almost 'see' each instrument in the space between listener and speakers. To be honest I wasn't expecting to hear much difference, if at all, and that is mostly due to my old cloth ears being past their 'best-by' date, but the difference was quite noticeable and also very enjoyable.

Stereophile Reflex M Review by Michael Fremer"I had on hand an older Graham Slee phono preamp, the Era Gold Mk.V - when I'd first listened to it, in January 2004, its highly accomplished sound took me be surprise. After re-familiarizing myself with the Era Gold's sound, I listened to the Reflex M and was surprised all over again...It was fast, clean, three-dimensionally solid, way more transparent...and made for mighty inviting listening - even through the Prince of Price No Limit's megabuck system"
